According to Magnússon (1989) and Schmid (2001), Old Norse abbatissa itself is either:\n# borrowed via Old English abbadisse and Middle Low German abbadisse, from Latin abbātissa;\n# directly borrowed from Latin abbātissa.\nRegardless of origin, the original ending was replaced with the feminine noun suffix -dís. Latin abbātissa is a combination of Latin abbās (“abbot”; loaned from Ancient Greek ἀββα, ἀββᾶς (“father or abbot”), loaned from Aramaic אַבָּא (“father”), inherited from Proto-Semitic *ʔabw-, from Proto-Afroasiatic *ʔab- (“father”)) and -issa (a feminine noun forming suffix; loaned from Ancient Greek -ισσα, an extraction of feminine derivations in -ια of demonyms in palatalised -ικ-, -ια itself from Proto-Indo-European *-ih₂ ~ *-yéh₂s).
